Bake through the Bible

A new way to teach your kids the gospel in the kitchen.

Bake through the Bible contains 20 stories which take you through the big storyline of the Bible. With each story there is a cooking activity designed to be simple enough for children to help with. Each recipe links with the story and has questions to prompt conversation. You can see what it looks like inside by clicking here (it’s pretty, so have a look).

We’ve been reading these stories at bedtime and the children have enjoyed both the stories and looking through the recipes. My son and daughter picked which recipe they wanted to try and have a long wish-list of ones they want to make soon.

Who is it for?

This book is aimed at parents and their young children. All three of our children have enjoyed the stories and Dan (5) and Mima (3) particularly liked the idea of cooking along with what they’re learning. The stories are varying lengths and our kids have engaged with them, especially when we have done one story for a few days in a row.

The design of the book is lovely. The visual instructions for the recipes are brilliant – Dan read the words and Jemima read the pictures. The book is a good size and they have managed to make lots of content feel easy to use and understand. There are is also a range of savoury and sweet recipes.

Should you buy it?

I like how unintimidating this book is. There are suggestions for simplifying the recipes and there is a relaxed feel all the way through – the focus is more on having fun getting to know God than making the perfect biscuit. Phew.

We made the ‘dirty and clean heart’ biscuits – the instructions were clear and the children had lots of fun. They were a bit distracted while we read and talked about the story – but then, they usually are!

I would really recommend this to anyone who wants inspiration for sharing the Bible with their children. It’s accessible and it has reignited our children’s interest in what we do at Bible time. I think it would be a great first book to try if you’ve never done Bible reading with your children. It's also a creative boost for families who are looking for something a bit different to try.
